Mealworms, Superworms & Feeder Insects Guide

Live mealworms, superworms and dried feeders are different choices. Match the feeder to your animal, prepare its storage and check delivery eligibility before ordering.

This guide covers

Suitable insect-eating reptiles

The leopard gecko introduces the topic. Reptile diets vary; these feeders are not appropriate for every reptile or a complete diet on their own.

Choose for the animal, not just the pack price

Lizards have very different diets: some eat insects, others eat mixed diets, and some are herbivores. Identify your animal’s species and life stage before selecting feeders. Ask a reptile-experienced vet about feeder size, variety, gut-loading and supplementation for that animal.

Do not assume one insect is nutritionally complete. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that common feeder insects can have an unsuitable calcium-to-phosphorus balance unless feeding practices address it.

Compare live and freeze-dried packs

Product PetProvo options Format
Mealworms 50g or 250g Live; sold by weight
Superworms 60 or 100 worms Live; sold by count
Freeze-dried mealworms 40g, 90g, 180g or 1kg Dried, not live

Check the selector for current availability. Approximate counts shown for weight-based mealworm packs are estimates, not a guaranteed worm count. Compare the format as well as quantity.

Prepare storage before the delivery arrives

Do not refrigerate live superworms. Their storage differs from ordinary mealworms. Use appropriate ventilated housing, suitable bedding and a moisture source, and maintain clean conditions according to feeder-specific care guidance.

Follow a mealworm-specific care sheet for mealworms rather than copying superworm instructions. Keep freeze-dried products sealed and dry as their label directs. Plan a suitable amount you can care for and use; more feeders are not automatically better value if they cannot be maintained properly.

Check live-feed delivery before ordering

PetProvo does not deliver live feed to the Western Cape or Eastern Cape. Orders containing live feed are packaged on Mondays to Tuesdays and sent via couriers on Tuesdays to Wednesdays. Timing can vary by region; confirm eligibility before placing an order.

Third-party transport can affect the feed’s condition, and live arrival is not guaranteed. Read the delivery policy and the individual product restrictions. Dried products are a separate format; check their own delivery details rather than applying live-feed assumptions.
