Dog Treats & Chews: Choosing Rewards for Your Dog

Choose rewards that fit your dog, your training routine and the whole day’s food. Compare treat formats and make chewing time a supervised part of everyday care.

This guide covers

Dogs

For dogs; check age, size and dietary suitability on the individual pack.

Start with the purpose

A small reward for repeated training and a longer chew are different purchases. Think about how often you will offer it, whether you can divide it into suitable pieces and how it fits your dog’s normal food. The pack weight tells you how much is in the bag, not how many treats your dog should have.

If your dog follows a prescribed diet or has dietary sensitivities, ask your veterinary team what rewards fit the plan before choosing a new ingredient.

Keep the daily treat allowance in view

WSAVA advises that treats should contribute no more than 10% of a dog’s daily calories. This is a calorie limit, not 10% of the food’s weight. Ask your vet about your individual dog’s energy needs and include rewards given by every member of the household.

Where calorie information is missing, request it rather than guessing a safe number from the bag size. A favourite treat still needs an appropriate portion.

Choose chews with care

Select a size and texture suited to your dog and stay nearby while it chews. Remove pieces that become small, damaged or unsuitable. The veterinary dental-care guidance from VOHC also stresses correct sizing and observation.

Avoid excessively hard chews, sharp edges and bones. A product called a “dental” treat does not by itself establish tested plaque or tartar benefits. Check specific claims independently rather than assuming every chew cleans teeth.

Compare PetProvo treat formats

Explore Chompie dog treats: beef knots in a 250g pack, beef offcuts in a 400g pack and beef sticks in the options shown on their listing. The knots page’s current pack is 250g despite its older URL.

For other formats, browse all dog treats, including biscuit and semi-moist ranges. Compare the current label, texture and pack size. Prices and availability stay on the product page.

Little facts. Better care.

Training and chewing differChoose the format for the activity, then portion it for your dog.
Calories are not bag weightThe WSAVA treat allowance refers to energy, not a percentage of the bag.
Names are not proofA dental-sounding name is not evidence that a particular product has earned a VOHC seal.
Supervision mattersStay present and remove pieces that become unsuitable.

Your field checklist

Before you choose

  • Match the treat to your dog’s size and age.
  • Read ingredients and feeding directions.
  • Plan how rewards fit the day’s food.
  • Supervise and inspect chews.
  • Keep fresh drinking water available.

A reward, not a replacement meal

Treats supplement a suitable diet. Ask your veterinary team about restrictions or chewing concerns before buying a new format.
