1. Plan around the fish

Research the adult size, temperature needs and compatibility of the fish you hope to keep before choosing a tank. Allow space for filtration and maintenance, and use a suitable, level support. A small bowl is not a shortcut to an easier aquarium. The RSPCA recommends a stable environment with enough room and appropriate equipment. Read its aquarium advice ↗

2. Prepare your equipment checklist

  • A suitable aquarium and stand, with a secure cover where required.
  • A filter sized for the tank and its intended stock.
  • A heater and thermometer if your chosen species need them.
  • Aquarium-safe substrate and shelter, suitable lighting and a timer.
  • A water conditioner, suitable water tests and a dedicated maintenance bucket.

Before buying: write down the tank’s working water volume, the fish species and the product’s exact purpose. A conditioner and a disease treatment are different purchases.

3. Understand cycling before adding fish

A biological filter needs established bacteria to process waste. The simplified sequence below shows why clear-looking water alone is not proof that a new aquarium is ready.

Use a fishless cycling method with guidance from an experienced aquarist. Test the water rather than relying on a fixed waiting period. A water conditioner does not replace biological cycling or testing. Read more from RSPCA Australia on aquarium water quality ↗.

4. Build the maintenance habit

Treat replacement tap water using an appropriate conditioner and follow its label. Plan partial water changes, record your test results and avoid over-cleaning biological filter media. Add stock gradually after the aquarium is ready. Ask a fish veterinarian or experienced aquarist about persistent water problems.
